Provider ranking methodology

How provider rankings work on 401kROBS.com

Direct answer: rankings exist only on surfaces that state a ranking, scoring, shortlist, or fit-ordering methodology. The current Provider Match ranks verified providers by a fit score using seven weighted answer categories, a 55% base, 0.41 multiplier, whole-point rounding, a 96% cap, and provider-slug tie handling. It is not a universal recommendation, quality rating, legal finding, tax opinion, fiduciary approval, or statement that ROBS is suitable for a reader. [1] [2] [3]

By Dennis Shirshikov. Published and reviewed: .

Current formula: score = min(96, round(55 + earned weighted points x 0.41)).

Commercial weight: affiliate relationship, referral status, provider name recognition, and provider slug add zero points; slug is only a deterministic tie break.

Where rankings exist, and where they do not

401kROBS.com has more than one provider surface. Some surfaces rank; many only organize evidence. A reader should not treat a provider mention as an endorsement unless the page states a methodology and explains the claim being made.

ROBS Provider Match

A personalized fit ranking based on the selected answers and current provider traits. It uses the published formula and returns immediate results without asking for contact information.

Provider comparison articles

Scenario pages may sort or shortlist providers for a defined use case only when the page states its evidence dimensions, weights, denominator, and tie handling.

Provider directory and tools

Directory inclusion and comparison-tool rows organize provider facts. They are not rankings unless the page says a scoring model is being applied.

  • A provider profile, directory row, source card, trust-page link, affiliate link, or provider inclusion decision is not a ranking by itself.
  • A page title using best must be read through the page-specific methodology, denominator, and scenario. It is not a universal best-provider claim.
  • Commercial availability, partner status, advertiser interest, provider name recognition, and brand familiarity do not create a ranking advantage.

Provider universe, eligibility, exclusions, and denominator

The current provider data contains 14 records. Provider Match scores verified providers and excludes records whose operating status, pricing, and service scope were unavailable during verification. Current excluded Provider Match records: ROBsAdvisor. [1] [2]

Scenario ranking pages may use the same 14-provider universe or a narrower denominator if the page says so. A provider can be included for reader utility while still being unverified, unavailable, historical, not currently scored, or zero-scored for a specific dimension. Missing public facts are never converted into positive evidence. [3] [6] [7]

Current Provider Match dimensions, weights, formula, ties, and data handling

Provider Match uses 100 possible weighted points across seven scored categories: business funding goal (18), rollover amount (12), expected employees (12), setup timeline (8), service priority (20), additional financing (15), and specialist support (15). Account type is required for eligibility notes but contributes zero score points because a provider cannot make an ineligible account eligible. [1] [2]

score = min(96, round(55 + earned weighted points x 0.41))

Providers sort by higher score first. If scores tie, provider slug sorts A-Z for deterministic ordering. Slug does not add points. A verified provider with no matching scored traits still displays the base score; an unverified provider is excluded before score calculation.

Other comparison pages must state their own dimensions, weights, and formulas when they rank. Some pages score delivered support at full weight, coordinated support at half weight, and optional, unknown, unverified, or excluded support at zero. Those formulas apply only to the stated scenario, not to every provider decision on the site.

Evidence statuses and missing-data treatment

Provider-controlled pages can establish what a provider publishes, states, charges, or says it includes. They do not prove that the provider is best, safest, compliant in every case, lowest cost for every reader, or suitable for a specific transaction. Official IRS and DOL sources set ROBS and fiduciary context, but they do not rank private ROBS providers. [6] [8] [9]

Delivered

The reviewed public source directly supports the dimension for that provider.

Coordinated or referred

The provider states that it coordinates, refers, or helps arrange the dimension; pages that score this status give half credit only when their model says so.

Optional or add-on

The source suggests availability outside the base service; current ranking pages generally give zero points unless the page-specific methodology states otherwise.

Unknown, unavailable, or unverified

No public source verified the dimension during the checked period; missing facts are not treated as favorable facts and normally score zero.

Excluded or historical

The provider or dimension is kept visible when useful to readers but is not scored for that ranking surface.

Update cadence, triggers, corrections, removals, and overrides

Provider facts are checked when a route is created or materially updated, when a source change is discovered, when a reader, provider submission, or provider flags a possible error, when a provider changes pricing, service scope, ownership, operating status, audit support, valuation support, employee support, financing coordination, cancellation terms, or exit support, and when internal review finds that a ranking statement no longer matches its evidence. The site does not promise live monitoring, automatic provider notification, a fixed recheck cadence, or a public revision ledger for every ranking update. [3] [10]

Editorial overrides should not be used to favor a provider outside the stated formula. If a methodology result would mislead because of stale evidence, broken source support, unsafe wording, or a provider-status change, the correction is to update the source facts, label the limitation, exclude the record under the methodology, or revise the page. The site should not silently change weights to manufacture a preferred winner.

Advertising, paid-placement, and conflict separation

401kROBS.com currently has no affiliate relationships and does not earn commissions from provider links. Commercial compensation does not determine inclusion, score points, ranking order, provider eligibility, or whether limiting facts are disclosed. Provider Match uses only the factors published in its methodology. [1]

Advertising and paid placement must be labeled and kept separate from independent rankings, methodology outputs, source-library entries, review pages, calculators, and comparison tools. Advertisers cannot buy a better methodology result, require deletion of unfavorable evidence, or require exclusion of relevant providers. [5]

Ranking versus recommendation, suitability, and professional judgment

A ranking can help order research questions. It cannot establish rollover eligibility, legal compliance, fiduciary prudence, tax treatment, valuation adequacy, prohibited-transaction risk, contract quality, service-provider reasonableness, provider solvency, investment suitability, business quality, franchise fit, lender approval, or future performance. [8] [9]

Use rankings as a shortlist for written diligence, not as instructions to hire a provider or use retirement-plan assets. ROBS decisions may require an ERISA attorney, CPA, TPA, valuation professional, lender, franchise advisor, transaction counsel, or other qualified specialist.

Reader verification actions before relying on a ranking

Before relying on a ranking, reproduce the page's logic and verify the provider facts that matter to your transaction.

  • Open the methodology or model section before relying on an ordered provider list.
  • Confirm the denominator: which providers were eligible, which were excluded, and why.
  • Request written setup fees, recurring administration fees, employee charges, valuation costs, audit support, cancellation terms, and exit fees directly from the provider.
  • Ask for provider-specific support for employees, Form 5500, valuation, audit, tax, legal, SBA, franchise, acquisition, sale, and plan-termination questions when those facts affect the ranking you are using.
  • Use the corrections policy if a provider fact, score explanation, source, disclosure, or commercial label appears outdated or unsupported.

Sources and verification destinations

These sources support how current ranking claims are bounded. Internal methodology and policy pages establish current site behavior; IRS and DOL pages establish ROBS and fiduciary context but do not rank providers.

[9]DOL Meeting Your Fiduciary Responsibilities

Official DOL booklet re-opened August 17, 2026. Supports service-provider selection, fee, conflict, documentation, and monitoring duties; it does not rank ROBS providers.

[10]Corrections policy

Current public path for reporting outdated provider facts, unsupported ranking claims, unclear disclosures, source problems, and correction limits.

Treat rankings as a map, not permission

The provider order can narrow your diligence list. Your account documents, provider agreement, fee schedule, business facts, and professional advice still control the decision.
